Undoubtedly, the most important historical precinct of this Magical Town is the majestic Church of Santa María de la Asunción, an architectural jewel located to the north of the convent house. Its construction, which began in 1550, marked the beginning of a religious legacy that has endured throughout the centuries. ✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄ Throughout its history, this church has witnessed significant transformations. Initially, the structure was half the size it is today. However, in a period of splendor and growth, between 1770 and 1777, a modification was undertaken that culminated in the increase of its length, adding 10 rods. This transformation embellished the temple and left an indelible mark on its present appearance. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ One of the most notable features of this church is its modest but elegant façade, flanked by two imposing towers that house bell towers and cupolas, which soar skyward as silent guardians of the community’s faith. Their presence is an unmistakable visual reference that evokes the connection between the earthly and the spiritual. Upon entering the interior of the church, a single nave is revealed that astounds with its simplicity and elegance. The coffered ceiling, an intricate woodwork that adorns the ceiling, confers a sense of beauty and craftsmanship that captivates visitors. The neoclassical altarpieces, true works of art in themselves, capture attention with their detailed ornamentation and reliefs that tell stories of faith and devotion. ✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄ A distinctive feature is the two rows of classical columns that line the church, supporting a kind of tribune that adds a touch of solemnity and grandeur to the space. The original dais floor has been replaced with St. Thomas stone, a change that has preserved its historic essence while ensuring its durability. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ The Santuario del Señor de Huaxtla is another church worth visiting. Its exterior has a certain Byzantine touch that attracts attention and inside you will find a beautiful neoclassical altar with a Christ carved in wood. Festivals and fairs ✦ If Tlatlauquitepec is known for anything, it is for the festivity of its people, who hold celebrations throughout the year that keep alive the traditions and identity of the town. ✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄ Perhaps the best known is the Red Hill Festival, which is held every year in April. The celebration includes a wide variety of events, including parades, concerts, contests, horseback rides and exhibitions, as well as an irresistible gastronomic corridor with the best of regional cuisine. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ In August, the Regional Fair of the Tuberose, the local flower of Tlatlauquitepec, is held. This festivity coincides with the celebrations of the Virgen de la Asunción, patron saint of the town. The entrance to the church is covered with carpets made of flowers, leaves, seeds and fruit. Processions, pyrotechnics, mechanical games, music and colorful traditional dances complete the festivities. The dances of the tocotines and negritos, quetzalines and santiaguitos are the most characteristic. The Maguey and Nut Fair, which also takes place in August, is an ideal occasion to visit Tlatlauquitepec, since during it visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the best pulque in Puebla, as well as typical products made with nuts. ✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄ In addition to the gastronomic corridor, there are lectures, horse races and bicycle routes, among other activities. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ On the eve of the Day of the Dead, the Festival de la Llorona is organized every year, which takes place in different parts of Tlatlauquitepec. Parades, offerings and contests are held in the center. Other points are the Sanctuary of the Lord of Huaxtla, the Ocotlán cemetery and La Soledad Dam, where a boat ride and a ceremony are held to guide the souls through their passage on earth. Other traditions of Tlatlauquitepec ✦ The list of festivities, rituals and traditions celebrated in Tlatlauquitepec is extensive. For example, on January 6, it is customary to distribute the “rosca de reyes” (ring of kings) among the community. Also on that day there are mechanical games, wrestling and a place to take pictures with the kings. ✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄✦⁎*⋄ On January 16 and July 16 are the patron saint festivities of the Señor de Huaxtla, during which there are races, dances, rites and the sale of local products. The Olinteutli Festival is celebrated during the spring equinox and is the perfect opportunity to connect with mother earth and energy through rituals, energetic cleansings, offerings and dances that take place on the Cerro Cabezón, an icon of Tlatlauquitepec. Lovers of the well-known Danza de los Voladores can also enjoy this hypnotic ritual, which is usually performed at the top of the same hill. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ The Tlatlauquitepec Fair is held in September, at the same time as the Mexican Independence Day celebrations. During these days, it is possible to enjoy charreadas, gastronomic contests, traditional games, artistic participations, parades, dances, music, handicraft and gastronomic expo.
